Quick Answer: How NHL Fantasy Scoring Works

In a standard fantasy hockey points league, a skater earns roughly 3 points per goal, 2 per assist, 1 per power-play point, and small fractions for shots on goal, hits and blocked shots. Goalies earn about 4 points per win, 0.2 per save and 3 per shutout, losing a point for every goal allowed.

Exact values vary by platform — ESPN, Yahoo and DraftKings each weight the stats differently, and DraftKings (a daily fantasy format) uses much larger numbers. Pick your platform above and enter the box score to total any player instantly.

Category vs Points Leagues

Fantasy hockey is played in two main formats. Knowing which you are in changes how you value every player.

📊 Category (Roto / H2H Categories)

Teams are measured in each statistical category. A common build uses skater categories — goals, assists, plus/minus, power-play points, shots, hits, blocks — plus goalie categories such as wins, GAA, save percentage and shutouts.

Best for: Managers who enjoy balancing a roster across many stats and tracking weekly category wins.

🔢 Points Leagues

Every stat earns a fixed point value and the higher weekly or season total wins. The calculator above uses points-league scoring.

Best for: Managers who want a direct, easy-to-follow points race — similar to NFL or NBA fantasy.

Note: In points leagues, volume stats like shots on goal, hits and blocked shots quietly add up — a defenseman who blocks four shots a night has real value even without scoring.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does NHL fantasy scoring work?

NHL fantasy scoring awards points to skaters for goals, assists, plus/minus, shots on goal, hits, blocked shots and power-play points, and to goalies for wins, saves, shutouts and goals against. Most season-long leagues run either a category (roto) format or a head-to-head points format. The calculator above uses points-league scoring.

What are the standard NHL fantasy scoring settings on ESPN?

ESPN standard skater scoring: goal = 3, assist = 2, plus/minus = +/-1, power-play point = 1, shot on goal = 0.4, hit = 0.4, blocked shot = 0.4. Goalies: win = 4, save = 0.2, goal against = -1, shutout = 3. Leagues can customise every value.

How are fantasy hockey points calculated for goalies?

Goalies earn points mainly for wins, saves and shutouts, with deductions for goals allowed. A typical scoring line is win = 4, save = 0.2, shutout = 3, goal against = -1. Because goalies can swing 8-12 points in a single start, many managers treat goalie streaming as a weekly decision.

What is the difference between category and points leagues in fantasy hockey?

In category (roto) leagues, teams are ranked in each statistical category such as goals, assists and wins. In points leagues, every stat is worth a fixed number of points and the higher weekly or season total wins. Points leagues reward volume; category leagues reward balance across every stat.

Which positions are most valuable in fantasy hockey?

Elite centers and wingers who score goals and assists carry the highest fantasy floor. Top defensemen are valuable because they add blocked shots and power-play points on top of scoring. Goalies are the highest-variance position — a strong starter can win you a week, but a bad start can sink it.
