How keeper value works
Keeper value is the difference between what it costs to keep a player and where they would be drafted on the open market. If you can keep a player in round 7 who would otherwise go in round 3, you have effectively gained 4 rounds of draft capital.
Most home leagues add a 1-round keeper penalty: a player drafted in round 8 last year costs round 7 to keep this year. Some leagues use a flat round, auction-based costs, or contract years. This calculator works for any round-based system โ adjust the โkeeper penaltyโ field to match.
Round-value rule of thumb
| Rounds gained vs ADP | Verdict |
|---|---|
| +3 rounds or more | Strong keeper โ keep without hesitation |
| +1 to +2 rounds | Solid keeper โ keep unless you have a better option at the cost |
| 0 rounds (break-even) | Coin flip โ depends on positional scarcity |
| -1 round or worse | Drop โ return them to the draft pool |
Keeper FAQs
How do you calculate keeper value in fantasy football?
Compare the round you would draft the player at this year (their projected ADP) against the round it costs to keep them (typically last year's round minus a 1-round penalty). If the ADP round is at least 2 rounds earlier than the keeper cost, it is a clear win.
What is a typical keeper round penalty?
Most home leagues use a 1-round bump โ keep a player at their original round minus 1. Some leagues use a flat round (e.g. always round 5) or auction value carryover. Always confirm your league rules before drafting.
Should I keep a player I drafted in round 1?
Almost never, unless your league lets you keep a 1st-rounder for free or for a 1st-round pick. Keeping a 1st-rounder at the cost of your 1st means you are getting zero discount โ you should re-enter the draft pool.
How many keepers should a fantasy league allow?
2โ3 keepers is the sweet spot for most home leagues. It rewards good drafting and shrewd waiver pickups without turning the league into a dynasty format. More than 4 starts to feel closer to dynasty.
Is keeper value different in PPR vs standard scoring?
Yes. In PPR leagues, pass-catching RBs and slot WRs are worth more, so their ADP runs earlier. A PPR-heavy WR2 kept at the same round cost as in a standard league represents better value in PPR. Always base your ADP comparison on the same scoring format as your league.
What happens if two managers want to keep the same player?
Only one manager can own a player โ whichever team drafted or acquired them. If you traded for a player mid-season, most leagues award the keeper right to the new owner. Check your league rulebook, as keeper eligibility rules vary significantly.
Should I keep a waiver wire pickup?
Waiver wire pickups are the best keepers in round-penalty leagues โ since they were never drafted, many leagues assign them a late-round keeper cost (e.g. round 10 or the last round). Keeping a breakout waiver add at round 10 who now has a round 3 ADP is the single best move in keeper fantasy.
Worked keeper example
Say you drafted Jahmyr Gibbs in round 4 last year. Your league uses a 1-round keeper penalty, so keeping him costs your round 3 pick this season. His current ADP is round 2.
Round 2 ADP minus round 3 keeper cost = +1 round gained. That's a solid keeper โ you're getting a likely round-2 producer for a round-3 pick. Enter those numbers above and the calculator will give you the same verdict instantly.
Now flip it: if his ADP had slipped to round 4 due to injury concerns, keeping him in round 3 gives you โ1 round โ you'd be overpaying. Drop him and take your chances in the draft.
Keeper value by position
Not all rounds are equal across positions. A round-2 RB and a round-2 WR represent very different levels of scarcity. Here's how to think about keeper value by position:
Running backs age fast and get hurt often. A young RB (under 26) with a clear lead role kept at a 2+ round discount is almost always worth it. Avoid keeping RBs over 28 regardless of the discount โ production cliffs are brutal.
Wide receivers peak later and age more gracefully than RBs. A WR1 kept at any positive discount is strong value. WR2s need a 2+ round advantage to be worth the roster spot โ the position is deep enough that you can find late-round WR2s in most drafts.
In 1-QB leagues, QBs are rarely worth a keeper slot unless you have a true elite (Lamar, Josh Allen) at a 3+ round discount. In superflex leagues, keeping any QB in rounds 1โ3 at a positive discount is generally correct.
Elite TEs (Travis Kelce tier) are the most valuable keepers in the game due to the massive positional drop-off. Keep any top-3 TE at a 2+ round discount without hesitation. Mid-tier TEs are rarely worth the keeper cost.
Keeper league formats and how they change the math
The round-penalty system is the most common keeper format, but leagues vary. Here's how to adjust your thinking for each:
- 1-round penalty (most common): Keep a player at one round earlier than where they were drafted. This calculator's default. The math is straightforward โ just compare ADP to keeper cost.
- Flat-round keeper: Every keeper costs the same fixed round (e.g. always round 5). These leagues heavily reward finding late-round studs โ a round-12 pickup kept in round 5 is exceptional value.
- Contract-year keepers: Each player can only be kept for 2โ3 years. Factor in how many years of value remain โ a player in their last contract year is worth less even at the same round discount.
- Auction keeper leagues: Instead of a round, you keep a player at last year's auction price plus an inflation factor (typically 10โ20%). This calculator uses round-based math, so for auction leagues, compare the kept salary against projected auction ADP value instead.
