How Does UEFA Euro Fantasy Scoring Work?

Every two years the European Championship arrives, and with it the official UEFA fantasy game. If you've played Fantasy Premier League you'll find it familiar — but the Euro version has its own scoring quirks that catch managers out. This guide breaks down exactly how UEFA Euro fantasy scoring works, then looks back at EURO 2024 and ahead to EURO 2028.

What Is UEFA Euro Fantasy?

UEFA Euro Fantasy is the official fantasy football game run by UEFA for the European Championship. You build a 15-player squad inside a budget, pick a starting XI and a captain for each matchday, and earn points based on how your players perform in real matches. It is free to play and runs on UEFA's official platform for the duration of the tournament.

The format is tournament-length rather than season-long, so the whole game plays out across roughly a month — group stage, round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals and the final.

UEFA Euro Fantasy Scoring Rules

Points come from goals, assists, defensive contributions, and a few bonus mechanics. The core values:

ActionPoints
Playing up to 60 minutes1
Playing 60+ minutes2
Goal — Goalkeeper or Defender6
Goal — Midfielder5
Goal — Forward4
Assist3
Clean sheet — GK or DEF (60+ mins)4
Clean sheet — Midfielder1
Every 3 saves — Goalkeeper1
Penalty save5
Penalty miss-2
Every 2 goals conceded — GK or DEF-1
Yellow card-1
Red card-3
Own goal-2

If those numbers look like FPL, that's because the base scoring is deliberately similar. The differences are in the bonus system and the squad mechanics.

The Star Player Bonus

UEFA Euro Fantasy uses a star player bonus rather than FPL's hidden Bonus Points System. Each match has designated star players, and additional points are awarded based on a performance rating UEFA assigns. In practice this means the standout performers in a fixture pick up extra points on top of their goals-and-assists base — but the mechanic is rating-driven rather than the action-by-action BPS tally FPL uses.

This is the single biggest scoring difference between the Euro game and FPL: there is no public BPS leaderboard to predict. You're relying on UEFA's match rating instead.

Captains, Transfers and Chips

Captain. Your captain scores double points for the matchday. Picking the right captain — usually an attacker with a favourable fixture — is the most important weekly decision, exactly as in FPL.

Transfers. UEFA Euro Fantasy gives you a set number of free transfers, with the rules typically loosening between the group stage and the knockout rounds (more transfers are usually granted before the knockouts so you can react to which teams advanced). Always check the in-game rules for the exact allowance for that tournament.

Limitless / wildcard-style chips. The Euro game has historically offered chips that let you overhaul your squad — most notably around the transition from the group stage to the knockout stage. Save your big squad-rebuild chip for that group-to-knockout switch, when half the teams are eliminated.

How UEFA Euro Fantasy Differs From FPL

If you're coming from FPL, keep these differences in mind:

  • Tournament length, not a season. The whole game lasts about a month, so every matchday matters more and there's no time to recover from a bad start.
  • Star player bonus instead of BPS. No hidden BPS table to read — bonus points come from UEFA's match ratings.
  • Knockout structure. Once the group stage ends, only 16 teams remain, then 8, then 4. Your squad needs players from teams you expect to advance.
  • Transfer rhythm. Free transfers are tied to the tournament's rounds, with extra flexibility around the knockout transition.

The underlying skill — value picks, captaincy, fixture reading — transfers directly. If you want to sharpen the points math, the Euro fantasy points calculator will total any player's matchday score instantly.

EURO 2024 Retrospective

EURO 2024 in Germany was a strong tournament for fantasy managers. Spain won the title with a young, attack-minded side, and their run to the trophy made Spanish players some of the best fantasy assets of the tournament — consistent minutes, attacking returns and clean sheets from a team that kept advancing.

The lesson EURO 2024 reinforced: in a knockout fantasy game, players from the eventual finalists are worth far more than their group-stage form suggests, simply because they play more matches. A midfielder who features in seven games will out-score a more talented forward whose team exits in the round of 16. When you build your squad, weight it toward teams you genuinely expect to go deep.

EURO 2024 content still draws a large audience years later, which tells you how evergreen tournament fantasy interest is — managers research past tournaments to prepare for the next one.

EURO 2028 Preview

The next European Championship, EURO 2028, will be hosted by the United Kingdom and Ireland across England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, in the summer of 2028. UEFA Euro Fantasy will return for it, almost certainly with the same broad scoring framework described above — the base values rarely change much tournament to tournament.

A few things to plan for as EURO 2028 approaches:

  • Home-nation interest will be high. With matches spread across the UK and Ireland, expect strong fantasy participation and plenty of attention on the host nations' players.
  • The scoring will be familiar. UEFA tends to keep the goals/assists/clean-sheet structure stable, so the rules in this guide are a reliable starting point.
  • Watch the official rules drop. UEFA publishes the exact transfer allowance, chip set and star-player details when the game launches. Check those before locking in your squad.

We'll update this guide with EURO 2028-specific scoring details once UEFA confirms them.

Frequently Asked Questions

How are points scored in UEFA Euro Fantasy?

Players earn points for minutes played, goals (6 for defenders and goalkeepers, 5 for midfielders, 4 for forwards), assists (3), clean sheets, and saves, with deductions for cards, penalty misses and goals conceded. A star-player bonus adds extra points for top performers.

Is UEFA Euro Fantasy the same as FPL?

No. The base scoring is similar, but Euro Fantasy is a month-long tournament game with a knockout structure, a star-player bonus instead of FPL's Bonus Points System, and transfer rules tied to the tournament rounds.

How does the captain work in Euro Fantasy?

Your captain scores double points for that matchday. Choosing an attacker with a good fixture as captain is the most important weekly decision.

Who hosts EURO 2028?
